About Our Project

Moving Stories organizes programs that hold space for the stories of migrants and those affected by migration. An initiative supported by the Incubator for Transdisciplinary Futures at Washington University, the project brings together faculty co-leads from four different departments across the School of Arts and Sciences and the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts.

Our work is guided by the question: how can narratives – visual, textual, and oral -- work to bridge divides between migrants and the communities in which they settle?

We believe that migration is a multifaceted experience that goes beyond stories of displacement and that includes moments of joy and celebration. Our exhibition, Moving Stories in the Making: An Exhibition of Migration Narratives, hosted by The Luminary, explores how contemporary artists craft stories of migration. A series of artist-led workshops and public engagements further explore creative approaches to migration narratives and target specific local communities. And our web-based app invites participants to share their own story of migration and/or browse stories submitted by others.

Do you have a story to tell?

Do you want to hear from migrants in their own words? We invite you to share your story of migration and/or read the anonymized submissions of others. Your participation will help Washington University researchers study how migration narratives forge communities and influence policy. You must be 18 years of age or older and currently be located in the United States to participate.
